THREE WAYS TO PLAY

Solo, Side by Side, or Across the World

Every way to play uses the same board, the same dictionaries and the same rules — and each one works in “Classic” or “Fair play” mode.

Against the AI

Four difficulty levels, from a relaxed first game to a real challenge. The AI plays fair: it never sees your letters and never peeks into the bag.

No internet

With a friend nearby

Two phones side by side connect directly over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. On a train, on a plane, in a village with no coverage, during a power cut.

No internet

Online by code

Create a room, send your friends the 4-digit code, and play — up to four players. Close the app and come back to your seat with the same code.

Mid-game board in Erudo: everyday words crossing each other, the opponent’s last word tinted blue, the scores and a rack with a star joker

A real game: the board, the scores, your rack

THE BOARD

A Real Word Game, in Your Language

A 15×15 board with double- and triple-letter and word cells, seven tiles on your rack and a bag of about a hundred letters with the real letter values of your language. A word you lay down locks the moment it is in the dictionary and shows its points — no button to press, no arguing about whether a word exists.

  • Tap any word on the board to read what it means
  • The star joker scores as the letter it stands for — and keeps that letter secret
  • Stuck? A hint shows the best word on your rack

Every screenshot on this page is a real game in the English dictionary — switch the page language above to see yours.

A Fair play round in Erudo: both players have the same letters, the round result shows who won the round and by how many points, the AI has already submitted

Same letters, one board, the best move wins

FAIR PLAY

Same Letters for Everyone

The oldest complaint about word games is “I just got bad letters”. Fair play removes it: every round, all players get identical tiles and move at the same time, in secret. The highest-scoring move goes on the board, and everyone keeps the points of their own move. Skill wins, not luck — and it works against the AI, with a friend nearby and online.

  • Identical racks every round, moves submitted simultaneously
  • Ties go to the longer word, then more tiles, then the faster player — against the AI, a full tie goes to you
  • A separate mode in every way to play, chosen when the game is created

Shown: a Fair play round against the AI, which has already submitted its move.

The AI lobby in Erudo: game mode, dictionary, four difficulty levels and a turn timer

Four levels, no internet

OFFLINE VS AI

An Honest Opponent That Never Needs Wi-Fi

Four difficulty levels, from Easy to Extreme. The AI builds words from its own rack only — it never looks at your letters or into the bag, and the easier levels are deliberately capped rather than randomly sloppy. Games are saved automatically: close the app, come back later, continue the same game.

  • Four levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, Extreme
  • Unlimited games and unlimited hints against the AI, free
  • Optional turn timer, a results chart and full statistics after every game

Everything in a game against the AI happens on your device — no internet, no waiting.

NEARBY

Two Phones, No Internet

One phone creates the game, the other joins, and the two connect directly over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct — no router, no mobile data, no account. Each player uses their own phone and sees only their own rack. It is the word game for a train, a flight, a cabin without coverage or an evening without electricity.

  • Direct connection between phones — nothing goes through a server
  • More than two players can join the same table
  • Unlimited games, free

Uses the Nearby devices permission on Android 13+, which is asked for only inside the Nearby lobby.

The online lobby in Erudo: a 4-digit room code shown as tiles, Fair play selected and a turn timer

Your room has a 4-digit code

ONLINE

A Room Code Instead of an Account

Create a room and you get a 4-digit code. Send it to your friends — they type it in and they are at the table. No registration, no e-mail, no friend lists: a code is all it takes, and the same code brings you back to your seat if you close the app. Up to four players, an optional turn timer and a pause.

  • Up to four players in one room
  • Return to your seat with the same code — the game waits
  • Turn timer and pause, so nobody is left hanging

The free version includes one new online game per day; against the AI and nearby there is no limit.

The dictionary picker in Erudo: sixteen downloadable dictionary languages with flags

16 dictionaries, downloaded on demand

DICTIONARIES

A Dictionary That Respects Your Language

Sixteen downloadable dictionaries, each with two word sets. Strict allows only base forms — the way purists play. Classic accepts every form of a word: plurals, cases, conjugations — nearly three million words in Ukrainian alone. Pick the dictionary when you create a game; the interface language is chosen separately, so an English menu with a Polish dictionary is perfectly fine.

  • Dictionary language and interface language are independent
  • Two word sets per language: Strict and Classic
  • Word meanings while you play — a game that grows your vocabulary

Dictionaries are downloaded once and then work without internet.

The Statistics screen in Erudo: win rate, wins, losses and draws, streaks and records

Win rate, streaks, records

STATISTICS

Every Game, Remembered

Win rate, streaks and records, a head-to-head table against every opponent, and a day-by-day log where each finished game opens in full — the final board, the scores, the move history and a chart of how the lead changed hand by hand. Perfect for settling who really is the better player.

  • Results sheet with a game-progress chart after every game
  • Head-to-head records against friends and the AI
  • Move history and scoreboard during the game, one tap away

All statistics stay on your device.

HOW TO PLAY

Ready in Two Minutes

  1. The dictionary picker on first launch: sixteen languages with flags, ready to download

    Install and pick a dictionary

Get Erudo from Google Play and choose the language you want to play in. The dictionary downloads once and then works offline; add more languages any time.

  2. The main menu of Erudo with the three ways to play

    Choose how to play

Against the AI, with a friend nearby, or online by code — then Classic or Fair play, the dictionary and an optional turn timer.

  3. The interactive tutorial guiding the first move on the board

    Build words, score points

Drag tiles from your rack onto the board. A valid word locks and shows its points; confirm the move and your rack refills. The highest score at the end wins.

The rules in one paragraph

Players take turns placing letter tiles on a 15×15 board to form words; the first word crosses the centre. Points are the sum of the letter values, multiplied by the bonus cells under freshly placed tiles. Using all seven tiles in one move earns +15. A star joker stands for any letter. When the bag is empty and a player runs out of tiles, the game ends and the leftover tiles are subtracted.

Erudo’s house rule

One word is scored per move: the most valuable dictionary word in the row you formed. Incidental side contacts are neither checked nor scored — less counting, more playing. Serious players may know a different convention; this one is deliberate and the same in every language.

New to word games? The app opens with an interactive tutorial in your language — one guided move and you know the essentials.

16 LANGUAGES

Play in Your Language

Each dictionary is built for its language, with that language’s letters, tile counts and letter values — not a translated English set.

The interface speaks the same 16 languages, chosen separately from the dictionary — so you can play with Ukrainian words in an English menu, or the other way round. Every tutorial uses real words from that language’s own dictionary.

Is Erudo Scrabble?

No. Erudo is an independent word game in the same crossword-board family, with its own rules: the most valuable word of a move is scored, the star joker keeps its letter secret, every language has two dictionary modes, and “Fair play” gives everyone identical letters. If you are looking for a Scrabble alternative without ads between turns, without an account and with your own language — this is it. SCRABBLE® is a registered trademark of Hasbro, Inc. and Mattel, Inc.; Erudo is not affiliated with either.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know

No. Erudo is an independent word board game: letter tiles, a 15×15 board, bonus cells — but its own rules. The most valuable word of a move is scored, the star joker keeps its letter secret and can be swapped back, every language has a Strict and a Classic dictionary, and the “Fair play” mode gives all players the same letters. SCRABBLE® is a registered trademark of Hasbro, Inc. in the US and Canada and of Mattel, Inc. elsewhere; Erudo is not affiliated with, endorsed or sponsored by either.

Only to download a dictionary once, and for online rooms. Games against the AI and games with a friend nearby over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct work with no connection at all — no mobile data, no Wi-Fi, no account.

Erudo is free: unlimited games against the AI and with a friend nearby, one new online game per day, every dictionary and word meanings. Banners appear only in the menu and on the results screen, never during a game, and a hint can be unlocked by watching a short video when you choose to. Premium is a single one-time purchase, not a subscription: it removes all banners, lifts the online limit and makes every hint instant.

No. There is no sign-up, no e-mail and no password anywhere in the app. Online rooms are joined with a 4-digit code, and the nickname you type is all other players see. Saved games, settings and statistics stay on your device.

Sixteen dictionaries: English, Ukrainian, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Danish, Finnish, Romanian, Turkish and Czech — each with its own letters, tile counts and letter values. The interface is available in the same 16 languages and is chosen separately, so you can play Ukrainian words with an English menu.

A mode where luck with letters is taken out of the game. Every round all players receive identical tiles and make their move at the same time, in secret. The highest-scoring move goes onto the shared board; ties go to the longer word, then to more tiles played, then to the faster player. Everyone keeps the points of their own move. It is available against the AI, with a friend nearby and online.

Strict accepts only base dictionary forms — for English, Ukrainian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian that means common nouns in the singular; for the other languages, the base form of every part of speech. Classic accepts every form of a word: plurals, cases, conjugations. You choose the word set when you create a game, and a running game keeps the set it started with.

Erudo scores the most valuable dictionary word in the row you formed; incidental side contacts are neither checked nor scored. It keeps moves fast and arguments short, and it is the same rule in every language and in every way to play. A new word still has to connect to the board through a real word — merely touching other letters is not enough.

Open “Play with a friend nearby” on both phones. One taps Create, the other taps Join, and the phones connect directly over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. Each player uses their own phone and sees only their own rack. On Android 13 and later the app asks only for the Nearby devices permission, and only inside that lobby.

Tap “Online game” and Create: the room gets a 4-digit code. Friends type it under Join and appear at the table — up to four players. The host picks the mode, the dictionary and an optional turn timer; the game can be paused, and if someone closes the app, the same code brings them back to their seat.

In the free version, banners appear in the menu and on the results screen — never on the board during a game, and never as videos between turns. The only video is the one you choose to watch to unlock a hint. Premium removes all ads.

Yes. On a tablet in landscape the board fills the left side of the screen and the scores, the rack and the last word sit on the right. Phones get the same game in portrait. Android 9 or later is required.
